| | Dumping Children In Nebraska (Safe Haven) | | This safe haven law in nebraska really got out of hand. People started traveling from miles away to abandon their children. The law was meant for small children, babies but people were dropping older children and even teenagers. Today they are going to change the safe haven law and they are afraid that there will be a rush to drop off kids before the have law is changed.I have been keeping track of these cases where the parents were leaving their children and my heart just went out those abandoned children. One man had 10 children and he abandon 9 of these children. I do believe some of the parents were just abusing this law. This is a link to one of the articles:http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/14/nebraska.safe.haven/index.html?iref=newssearchWhat is your opinion of this law?Would you abandon your children? | |
| | Nebraska decides on new "Drop Off Age" | | http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27282433/as a follow up to my previous post on how people could legally abandon their kids under 18 years old due to a legal loop hole in wording of law.. well they finally changed it to 3 days old at max but that seems a little too young.. now im not saying that people should be able to wait months but 3 days seems short to me compared to some peoples situations etc.. what do you guys think? 3 days or less a good age to drop off and leave your kids with out legal punishment? | |

| 14-year-old Iowa girl abandoned under Nebraska law | | OMAHA, Neb. - A 14-year-old Iowa girl was abandoned Tuesday in Nebraska under its safe haven law, but the person who left her could face prosecution in the girl's home state, Nebraska health officials said. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said the girl is from council bluffs, Iowa, just across the Missouri River from Omaha. She was left at Creighton University Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon, and her case was reported to Iowa authorities. The girl is the 17th child overall and the first from another state to be abandoned since the law took effect in July. Many children left to date under the safe-haven law have been teenagers or preteens. The law mentions "child" without defining it, and as a result encompasses anyone up to age 19.Nine children abandoned last month were siblings abandoned by a father who said he was overwhelmed.(follow link for full story)http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081008/ap_on_re_us/safe_haven;_ylt=AtIVUPmNBpqLc3iZq3CnvHas0NUEThis is insane. People are now just free to abandon their kids? I think the law on this needs to be rewritten and soon.Could you abandon your... | |
| | Nebraska's new "safe haven" law allows parents to abandon children up to age 19 | | Many states have safe haven laws for newborns and children up to age 3. Now the law allows parents to drop of a child under 19 at a hospital if they can't handle them, if they're disruly or addicted to drugs or alcohol and the parents can't control them. Myself, I would never do that..I had problems with my boys in high school but eventually handled them. One of my boys dropped out of high school and became very defiant but I managed. But I know there are people who can't handle their children--children who become drug addicts and steal from them or even physically abuse their parents. What do you think of such a law? There've been no takers so far, thank goodness, but can you see a time where you would have wished for this or may need it in the future? Do you think it's right that there is such a law instead of intensive family counseling and in-patient rehabilitation at an affordable price? | |

| NEBRASKA... Is it TRUE??? | | While driving home today from up north I was listening to talkback radio (as I do) only to be informed if you please that the state of nebraska has introduced a new law allowing new mothers to leave (or DUMP if you will) their unwanted newborn babies at the nearest state hospital? Thats it! Thanks for calling! See ya again someday..NOT!
FURTHER! this law APPARENTLY also applies to ALL minors up to the age of 18?
WHAT THE F?
I also heard that laws similar to the above have been passed in the majority of other states?
Again .. WHAT THE F?
I even heard an expat Kiwi call from Miami, claiming that at one stage a Father of 10 dumped 9 (yes 9) of his kids at a hospital in his state!
Why? because his wife had apparently passed on and he couldn't cope with 9 kids, so he KEPT the 18 year old and DUMPED the rest?
WASSAT ABOUT?
Sorry guys but I work my a$%^ off here in NZ just to keep my partner and 3 kids fed and clothed, and I would DIE before I dumped ANY of them!
I average 70+ hours a week and live on less than 5 hours sleep a night, then in my spare time I'm hanging out here at mylot or doing PTC hopng to make that extra... | |

| Nebraska made national news today! | | A tornado hit one of our college towns and thank heavens they are not reporting any person's injured just a lot of buildings and such. We had tornados pop up all over but it was the only one that did a lot of damage. It would nice to be on the news for good things not bad things. Please keep all the families in your thoughts and prayers. | |
