One of the places they chose to spread the message of hate was at the virginia Holocaust Museum.They were greeted by a couple of hundred counter protesters. | | View from Virginia City, NV | | I took this photo of the mountains while we were in virginia city last week. virginia city is one of the most famous old mining towns in the US, site of the famous Comstock silver strike. Now it's basically a tourist town with saloons and shops and so on. When we were there it was pretty cold, 20's Fahrenheit, with a fair amount of snow on the ground. First thing we did was hit a saloon for some hot chocolate for the children and hot buttered rum for us. They had a St. Bernard named Pondy (for Ponderosa) who had a "rum barrel" on her collar. virginia city is at about 6200 feet elevation, so no wonder it was cold. They had a candy shop with Bit o' Honey (yum), so I stocked up. That stuff is hard to find. After that we drove home as the MIL was panicking at the thought of the clouds coming in over the Sierra Nevada. I guess she didn't want us to turn into the Donner party: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party We made it home safe and sound though, not more than a few drops of rain and no snow. Maybe we can go back next year when it's warmer and check out the train ride. | |

| | Sorry, Righties, Virginia Gubernatorial Race NOT a Referendum On President Obama | | Sure, the GOP candidate for governor in virginia is certain to win but that state has elected a governor from the opposite party of the President in every election for over 30 years! It's just what they do. Also, the turnout has been dismal, especially when compared to last year's Presidential election and the young voters and the minorities have simply not come out this year, something else that's quite typical of off-year elections. It's not even really a referendum on the right! Bob McDonnell is far-right socially as his mater's thesis from 20 years ago shows, but he downplayed that completely during his campaign and has run more as a moderate. He even said "Thanks but no thanks" to Sarah Palin's offer of stomping for him. She did record a "robo call" but it never even mentioned the candidate or the party by name. Then there's the sad but true fact that the Democrat, Deeds, ran a lousy campaign and wasn't a good candidate at all. Reportedly, the voters were turned off by his negative ads pretty much from the start. Anyway, don't celebrate too much just yet...lol!!Annie | |
