| | | | Coast Guard chief sees big risk from oil spill | | (Reuters) - The Coast Guard is scrambling to prevent a giant slick from an oil rig blowout from reaching the U.S. Gulf of Mexico shoreline, Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad W. Allen said on Wednesday."This is potentially a very serious issue ... We are under no illusion of the risk that's involved here," Allen said.He told reporters in Miami the Coast Guard, working with federal and local authorities, had activated contingency measures aimed at protecting at-risk areas of the coast line, such as nature wetlands, from the spill. But the slick could still threaten the coasts of eastern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, Allen said, adding that there was no immediate risk to south Florida."The best projection is that there would be no impact on the shoreline for three days," Allen said, repeating forecasts that the spilled oil would not reach shore until the weekend."It depends on the weather and what the trajectory is," said Allen, who spoke after addressing a maritime security conference in Miami. The Coast Guard said on Tuesday that the crude slick had a circumference of about 600 miles, covering about 28,600 square miles (74,070 sq km). That is slightly... | |
| | Jamie Oliver | | Jamie Oliver was reported here as being in tears because the people of Huntingdon west virginia and more widely the US were not impressed with his healthy eating message. There is a school of thought here in the UK that is not impressed with his overbearing influence on our school meals, but I think his healthy eating message is helpful because it informs my menus and meal planning. My son at 30 is too old for school meals though perhaps that's why I'm not too bothered about school meals. When I was young school dinners were centrally planned and had to be balanced so we had horrors like sago and rice pudding, not to mention lumpy mashed potato and boiled fish!! Not now kids have beans, chips, pizzas. What do you think? Is Jamie right to tell our government what to put in school meals (which he is doing in the UK) or, as in the US to make TV programmes about healthy eating and in Huntingdon reduce one mother to tears apparently. | |
| | Are they breaking the law or ignoring it? | | The Democrats in Comgress are set to use Reconciliation to ram health care reform through. This is not what Reconciliation was passed for, this is not me saying this, Democratic Senator Robert Byrd, of West Virginia, who helped write the bill is saying it. So are the Democrats breaking the law, or do they think that they are above the law? | |
| | Unbelievable: No Wonder Today's Kids Are Obese And Unhealthy | | I've yet to watch the show The Food Revolution with Jamie Oliver and it's to make it's premiere on March 26 and plan to watch it, but did see a short segment on World News Now. The premise of the show is that Jamie Oliver hopes to turn around the eating habits of Huntington, West Virgina. He was successful in changing the eating habits for school programs in his native England and now hopes to do the same here. Huntington, West Virginia has been cited as the unhealthiest town in America, where the vast majority of people of all ages are extremely obese and have the highest rate of diabetes in the world. One segment I saw shows a family who are all extremely overweight, the son being only twelve years old and over 300 lbs. Oliver looked at the typical food they eat and all consisted of nothing but pizza and fast foods, nothing healthy, no fruits, no vegetables. He also went to the local elementary school at breakfast time where they were serving pizza, instead of something more appropriate for breakfast. Then in one classroom he held some fresh food and asked the kids if they knew what it was. One kid thought it was potatoes...but no, in actuality it was four tomatoes on a... | |

| | Update on the states and the mandate | | So far two states have actully filed lawsuits. Florida and Virgina. They did it today.
36 other states say they are in the process of putting their paperwork together. 36 state legislatures so far have proposed measures to challenge the constitutionality of the new federal bill, while 29 states are also calling for ballot questions to amend their constitutions and 13 are looking to change state law.
Some states are doing both.
Here is a list of the states currently fighting the mandate. Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and WyomingIt will be interesting to see how the legislation goes in each state and how many end up joining the law suit. The states are all over the map and cover both blue and red states. This could really complicate things. This is well over 1/2 of the states in our country. How do you think this will play out? | |
| | My Drive to Work this Morning -- HORRIBLE!! | | We received nearly 30 inches of snow over the weekend here in Martinsburg, West Virginia... Due to the weather and horrible road conditions, our office opened at 10:00 am rather than 7:30 am, however the roads are still incredibly difficult to drive on and very dangerous. I saw quite a number of people getting stuck all over the place and was scared to death I was going to get stuck! I made it to work okay, but now I am worried once I leave here for the ride home. The only time I got into a bad accident, which totaled my vehicle, was on black ice a few years back and was the only accident I've ever been in. I am scared to drive in this weather, but I may lose my job if I don't go, so I just leave considerably earlier and take my time and use common sense... Do you have to drive out in lots of snow and bad road conditions? I can't wait for spring!!!*sigh* | |
